3. Special Purpose Additive Technology

Aerosil Gearmax XP incorporates four proprietary additive technologies beyond the standard EP/AW package, each targeting a specific failure mode in industrial gear systems.

Adhesive-Cohesive Polymer

A high-molecular-weight polymer additive that imparts tackiness and film-forming tenacity to the oil. It ensures the lubricant film clings to gear flanks and bearing surfaces even under centrifugal throw-off, shock loading, and vibration.

  • Prevents oil throw-off on open gears and ring gears
  • Maintains continuous lubrication under intermittent or shock loads
  • Reduces lubricant consumption in splash-lubricated systems

Seal Conditioner

A specialised elastomer-compatible additive that actively conditions and rejuvenates rubber seals and gaskets. It counteracts the hardening, shrinkage, and embrittlement that cause seal leakage over time.

  • Prevents seal leakage and oil loss at gearbox housings
  • Compatible with NBR, FKM, HNBR, and PTFE seals
  • Extends seal service life — reduces unplanned maintenance

Gear Wear Protection (EP/AW)

A sulphur-phosphorus EP additive system that reacts with metal surfaces under high contact pressure to form a sacrificial tribochemical layer. This prevents metal-to-metal contact, scuffing, and pitting on gear tooth flanks.

  • FZG fail stage ≥ 12 (DIN 51354-2) — high load-carrying capacity
  • Protects against micro-pitting, scuffing, and abrasive wear
  • Significantly extends gearbox overhaul intervals

Water Emulsification Resistance

A demulsifier additive system that rapidly separates entrained water from the oil phase. It prevents stable water-in-oil emulsions that degrade the lubricant film, promote corrosion, and accelerate additive depletion.

  • Water separability ≤ 30 min at 54°C (ASTM D1401)
  • Maintains oil film integrity in wet or humid environments
  • Supports longer drain intervals by preventing oil degradation from water contamination

4. Performance Features & Benefits

  • Extreme-pressure (EP) additive package — FZG fail stage ≥ 12
  • Adhesive-cohesive polymer additive — ensures tenacious oil film adhesion on gear flanks, preventing oil throw-off and maintaining continuous lubrication under shock loads
  • Seal conditioner additive — rejuvenates and conditions elastomeric seals to prevent hardening, shrinkage, and leakage, extending seal service life significantly
  • Advanced anti-wear (AW) chemistry — forms a protective tribochemical layer on gear tooth surfaces, minimising gear wear and pitting under boundary lubrication conditions
  • Demulsifier system for rapid water separation — quickly releases entrained water to prevent emulsification, protecting against corrosion and maintaining oil film integrity for longer drain intervals
  • Excellent oxidation and thermal stability — resists oil degradation at elevated operating temperatures
  • Good rust and corrosion protection for ferrous and non-ferrous metals
  • Compatible with standard mineral oil seals and paints

5. Applications

  • Enclosed industrial gearboxes (spur, helical, bevel, worm)
  • Open gear drives and ring gears
  • Circulating lubrication systems
  • Bearings operating under high load
  • Steel mills, cement plants, mining equipment
